Christopher Birkinshaw, a plant ecologist, works for the St. Louis, Missouri,-based Missouri Botanical Garden in Madagascar, one of the most biologically rich, yet biologically endangered, places on Earth.
The U.K. citizen joined the Garden’s international plant collecting department, and he quickly demonstrated a gift for working with his project’s Malagasy colleagues and staff. Now he manages several of the Garden’s projects on Madagascar. Birkinshaw has shown great talent in blending the hopes and desires of the Malagasy people with conservation programs. One of his colleagues has written of him: “Chris’s success is in large part due to his being particularly attentive to the needs and sensitivities of the Malagasy with whom he interacts and to his ability to offer advice rather than telling people what to do—a mistake unfortunately made by many ‘technical advisers’ working in Madagascar.” ¤ |
