Welcome to the Biodiversity Leadership Awards Web site. The site and the awards recognize and reward efforts by researchers, scholars, and advocates to protect Earth's most valuable resource — its biological diversity. The awards are made by The Bay and Paul Foundations, Inc..

Eight new winners of Biodiversity Awards

A fourth round of Biodiversity Leadership Award winners was chosen in late July 2004. The eight—who work in the Americas, the Philippines, New Caledonia, Ethiopia, and Madagascar—join the thirteen others who previously received recognition for excellence in protecting the natural world.

The new winners share US$900,000, one of the largest and most prestigious awards for environmental stewardship.  The current round of awards brings the total of Biodiversity Leadership Awards made since 1996 to US$3,240,000.

Two new awards. In 2004, for the first time, two of the winners are designated Biodiversity Emerging Leaders. They were chosen from many who, in the words of The Bay and Paul Foundations, “have shown early achievements and creative excellence in solving problems relevant to conserving biodiversity or otherwise contributing to a greater scientific understanding for the protection of our natural world.”

The winners' names, along with thumbnail descriptions of their work, appear on the following pages. In addition, this site will contain updates on the work and lives of previous winners. See the small type below to learn how to keep up to date with changes to the site.

On the pages that follow, you will find articles and photographs about the US$180,000 awards themselves, the most recent winners and their work, and the original, second, and third rounds of winners, who received their awards in 1996, 1999, and 2002. There is also information about the selection process and the Foundation.
